He sat motionless for a while. Do something? What was Minato even doing, being back and all and not seeing his friends? Why was he in this small town talking to this girl? Why was he back at all? Plus, how much did he want to reveal to this girl? She seemed sharp. “…Well, it was more than just, Naoto-san. It was much more serious than a few girls passing out, I’ll leave it at that.”

Naoto nodded her head. She sighed as she got up and went to the kitchen to start making eggs and bacon for her and Minato. “I’m sorry Minato-san. I like speaking to you. But I feel like if you stay here, I’m holding you back. Perhaps after breakfast you should just go. I like you as I said, don’t get me wrong. But…” she looked at him briefly. “I…I can’t help but to feel like I’m getting in your way. Because I am nothing but a child.” Then she turned to face her concentration on the food again.

Child? That’s what she was worried about? Minato only seemed a bit older than her. He was only 19, and he had been dead for two years, which almost made him 17 at heart. He was a child too, and it confounded him that it made her insecure around him. If anything, he was in her way. He was the one taking advantage of her place.

"…You’re not holding me back at all, Naoto-san. You’re a great person."

Minato stared at the disheveled girl in front of him. She was lean, and looked weary, as if she'd been through a lot. He approached her cautiously. "...Hello. I'm MInato. Who are you?" (This is okay right?)

Chell turned when she heard the voice addressing her. She looked up at the young man, and put a small smile on her face. She had yet to come across anything to help her communicate so she was left with just a wave in greeting and her small smile.

(yeah it’s great!)

A wheat field? That didn’t make much sense, considering that there were almost no wheat fields even remotely near Iwatodai. It was quite industrialized for miles, and even then, she didn’t look Japanese, although, from his perspective, she seemed to maybe have a bit of Japanese in her heritage. Was she visiting relatives or something?

But falling asleep in a wheat field? Why would that be? What was she doing in a wheat field at all, unless she worked there? He tapped his forehead for a second. She seemed very intelligent, very savvy, like she was good at solving problems. Did she work somewhere near here? In fact, how old was she? She seemed older than Minato, definitely. She seemed to be around working age.

"…I’m sorry if this intrudes, but what were you doing before the wheat field? Was this even in Japan at al?"

Now that she thought about it, considering that he used “san”, it kind of rang some bells. She had learned something about it, or maybe it was knowledge from before the facility, either way it was familiar. It wasn’t English, and the boy definitely didn’t seem American, nor did he sound like Wheatley, and she was sure that accent had been British. But Minato did seem to know English. So what was he…figuring that out would certainly help in figuring out where she was.

Chell had a thoughtful look on just as he did, trying to figure out the solution to a problem that she definitely didn’t have all the pieces to. But she’s worked with harder. Then he said it, Japan! Yes that was familiar!

Her writing became faster as she answered his question, Japan! Oh that’s so familiar, and Asian country, right? No, no the field is not in Japan. The field is in America.I had ended up out there after I was released from the facility…

It wasn’t exactly intruding but talking abut the facility did make her a bit uneasy. The energy from before kind of drained out of her after she mentioned it, and she even went so far as to look uncomfortable in the jumpsuit and tank top she was wearing. She hated the bright orange and the fact Aperture Science was still spayed across her chest. The only thing she did like was her long fall boots.

Chell started to look uncomfortable, and Minato knew how to take cues. She looked at her clothes almost with a shameful or scared face and he managed to make out the words ‘Aperture Laboratories’. It wasn’t a word Minato was aware of, even though it seemed to be English. He decided he wouldn’t question further about this facility, but what he did recognize was that she said she was in an American wheat field. A country half way across the planet from here. Which meant from the time she fell asleep to the time she woke up, she might have been drugged.

"…Were you kidnapped, Chell-san? Do you have any enemies?"

MInato stopped. Honestly this was getting nowhere. They would neevr find a light switch if it even existed. It was like finding a needle in a haystack, except with an eyepatch and a broken hand. He did have another option though, relying on Rita having forgotten something obvious. Time to put on the old Minato charm. “…Rita, do you have a match or lighter of some kind?”

This guilt was nagging at him as well, though.

image

"…I apologize for earlier. I should not have snapped at you, considering you’re probably frustrated from being in the same situation."

"Me? A lighter? Why would I carry a sort of thing? I’m fifteen. I don’t smoke." Rita rolled her eyes and then paused, lowering her arms as she looked down. It took a lot of her pride to do this.

”.. It’s..”

image

"It’s.. Fine. Whatever." She muttered, her face turning a crimson hue. Talk about a hole in her pride.

It seemed like Minato found a clsss-A tsundere. He never imagined it would exist outside of video games and manga that he sometimes read when visiting the bookstore.

But of course she wouldn’t have a lighter. What kind of high-schooler that didn’t smoke would carry a lighter?

He bumped against another wall, and felt some kind of cord. “…Hey, I found something, Rita-san. Where does it lead?”

Chell? Was that foreign? It was unlike any name Minato had ever heard. But her other written comment stuck too. Nicest person? He highly doubted it. He just seemed to be constantly at the right place at the right time, like someone was controlling him and feeding him the right thing to say. “…You must not know that many nice people, then, Chell-san. I’m far from the nicest person in the world. But the question is, what are you doing here?”

Of course she didn’t know that many nice people. The only things she knew were robots that had tried to kill her. There was Wheatley…but he was gone now. Minato here was the only person who had ever thought to apologize for her muteness, and the only one to ever give her something that she could communicate with. He really was the nicest person she’s ever met.

She started writing again, under her earlier message, No I actually don’t know that many people at all. Let alone nice ones, but so far you seem very nice to me. And that’s a good question, the last thing I remember before coming here is falling asleep in a wheat field. I’ve been trying to find people ever since…

She was curious about the “san” he put at the end of her name. What could that mean? But perhaps it’s just how people talked? Although that was never anything she learned…but what would she know about social things? She had been trapped in a facility with a homicidal AI for who knows how many years.

Minato, once he heard Rita shuffling around, resisted the urge to ‘accidentally’ step on her toes. Petty grudges would get him nowhere at this point. It took only a while to stop. Wait, why was he here? Why was a girl obviously not from Japan here? What was going on? It almost felt like a prank from Junpei or something. “…Sorry to ask, but what are you doing here, stuck with a boy like me in the middle of nowhere?”

"I could just use.. Ugh." She muttered to herself, shaking her head. Rita paused and glanced at the general direction in which the voice came from.

"I don’t know, and honestly, that’s a phrase that I haven’t said very much recently." She then continued to attempt to find the light switch, hoping that it’ll show itself soon enough. Honestly.. All she really needed to do was use fireball or some other flame-type move, and they’d be all set. However.. She was sensing from hostility from Minato.

Interesting name, although it didn’t bug Minato at all by this point. But the favor bugged him. What would this girl possibly want? “…Alright, this may sound stupid at this point, but help me look for a light switch. We may really just be in a dark room.”

"Alright, alright."

Rita began to feel around, attempting to grope something- anything- in attempts to find the ‘light switch’. However, Rita doubted that they were just in a dark room, since it was really.. Just a joke.

Hey, at least the girl had guts. Better than most kids in Japan nowadays. “…Well then hopefully you can help me get out of wherever we are, because as long as I’m stuck here, blind as a bat, you are too.” The girl sounded young, maybe a few years younger than him. “…Who are you?”

"Hm.. Should I?" She grinned and then tossed her short hair over her shoulder. "I’m just kidding. Yeah, I’ll help you, if you do me a favor after we get out of here."

Are you looking into your own soul?

He officially hated children now. “…No, I seem to have gone blind. I may need surgery, miss. Please excuse me if I accidentally hit you.”

"…" The voice came from nowhere and surprised Minato. And to Minato’s immense luck, it was sarcastic. Great, just what he needed. An unhelpful brat that felt a constant need to comment and anything and everything. "…Maybe if a light switch existed, I could move away from it. Also, maybe if I actually got someone helpful to respond, I might not be stuck in the dark anymore either. Just a thought."

"Hm. I’m surprised that you could find out what the tone in my voice was. Not many can."

image

"Calm down, jeez. It’s not like I was trying to insult you.” Rita stated, rolling her eyes. She ran a hand through her brown hair as her eyes continued to adjust to the darkness. Wow, this guy didn’t seem to be very nice. Oh, well. The nicer the denser, isn’t that the saying?
